About N-up PDF

N-up PDF layouts are how you print a 60-slide lecture on 15 sheets or proofread a long draft without a ream of paper. Pick 2, 4, 6, 9 or 16 pages per sheet and the sheet size, A4, Letter or A3. Two and six pages go on a landscape sheet and the others on portrait, so each page gets as much room as possible.

Pages are scaled evenly, keep their proportions and sit in a grid with small gaps. Draw a border around each page makes the grid easier to read or cut. Under More options you can switch the order to right to left for manga or Arabic documents. The result is a new PDF, ready for any printer.

N-up PDF: questions and answers

What is an N-up PDF, and why would I use one?
A PDF where several original pages are printed on one sheet, like 4-up handouts from a slide deck. It saves paper and makes long documents easier to skim.
How many pages can an N-up PDF put on one sheet?
Up to 16. For readable text, 2 or 4 is best on A4; 9 and 16 suit slides with large type or thumbnail overviews.
Will the text still be readable?
Pages are scaled down as vectors, so they stay crisp. How comfortable small text is depends on the layout, so print a test sheet first. Trimming wide white margins with Crop PDF beforehand leaves more room for the content.
Do I need to pay to print handouts this way?
No. A free account covers 2 tasks a day and visitors 2 in total, for PDFs up to 50 MB. VIP adds unlimited tasks and files up to 1 GB. Slides spread over several PDFs can be joined with Merge PDF first, so one task covers the whole set.
Is my lecture or draft stored?
Only for an hour, after which the upload and the finished sheets are deleted automatically. The layout is done in an isolated process nobody looks into.
