Excel and CSV

Excel to CSV saves each sheet as a CSV with a comma, semicolon or tab, and adds a BOM by default so Excel shows accents and Chinese correctly when it reopens the file. CSV to Excel works out the columns and the encoding for you. XLS to XLSX and ODS to Excel copy the data of old or LibreOffice workbooks into XLSX.

Data for developers

Excel to JSON uses the header row as keys, and JSON to Excel spreads nested fields over columns. Excel to SQL writes CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server or Oracle, and SQL to Excel reads a dump back into rows. XML and YAML have their own converters in both directions.

How do I stop Excel from garbling a CSV file?
Save the CSV with Excel to CSV and keep Add BOM ticked, and Excel reads the characters correctly. To open a CSV someone sent you, use CSV to Excel, which detects the encoding.
Which spreadsheet converters work without uploading?
CSV to JSON, JSON to CSV, XML to JSON, JSON to XML and JSON to SQL run in your browser, so the data stays on your device. They're also exempt from the daily task limit.
Is the spreadsheet converter free?
Yes. On the server converters, visitors get 2 tasks and free accounts 2 a day, for files up to 50 MB, while VIP is unlimited with files up to 1 GB. The browser converters have no limit at all.
How do I turn an Excel sheet into SQL?
Open Excel to SQL, upload the workbook or a CSV, and pick your database and table name. The header row becomes the column names, and you can include CREATE TABLE and set how many rows go into each INSERT.
Are formulas kept when I convert a workbook?
CSV, JSON and the other data formats store values, so each formula cell is exported as its last calculated result. The formulas themselves remain only in your original workbook.
