About Unlock Word

Unlock Word files that no longer need a password: a document you open every day, one a colleague protected before handing it over, or a file you're about to pass to someone who'd otherwise need the password too. Upload the DOCX or DOC, type the password you already use and download a copy that opens without asking. Workbooks with an open password go through Unlock Excel in the same way.

We don't crack or guess passwords; without the right one, the file stays closed. For DOCX files, Restrict Editing protection is lifted as well, so read-only or comments-only limits disappear. If the file had no protection at all, you get it back with a note saying so. The password you type is erased from our records when the task ends.

How to use Unlock Word

    Upload the Word file

    Click Choose file or drop the DOCX or DOC on the page.

    Type it in The document's password exactly as it was set, capitals included.

    Start the task

    Press the button to remove the password from the Word file. A wrong password is reported right away and doesn't use up a task.

    Save the new file. It opens in Word, WPS or any viewer without a password prompt.

Unlock Word: questions and answers

Can you remove a password from Word if I've forgotten it?
No. We don't crack passwords, and Office encryption can't be opened without the right one, by us or anyone else. Try the passwords you usually use, or ask whoever sent the file.
Will the document change when I remove the password from Word?
No. The content, layout and comments stay exactly as they are. Only the encryption comes off, plus any Restrict Editing setting in a DOCX. The unlocked copy is ready to edit, or to combine with other documents in Merge Word.
What if the file wasn't password protected?
If it had no protection of any kind, you get it back with a note saying so. A DOCX that only had editing restrictions comes back with those removed.
How many files can I do for free?
Visitors get 2 tasks in total and free accounts 2 per day, with files up to 50 MB. A wrong password doesn't count. VIP removes the daily limit and raises the size to 1 GB.
Is it safe to send you my password?
It travels over HTTPS, is used only to decrypt your file in an isolated process and is deleted from our records the moment the task ends. The files themselves are deleted after one hour.
