About Protect Word
Password protect Word files before you email a salary letter, send a draft contract to a client or leave a CV on a shared computer. Upload the DOCX, type the password twice and download a copy that Word won't open without it. The protection travels with the file, wherever it's forwarded.
The file is encrypted with AES-256, the same method Word uses for File > Info > Protect Document > Encrypt with Password, so the recipient needs no plug-in. The whole document is encrypted, not just hidden, so opening it in another program won't reveal the text either. Your password is used only while the task runs and is wiped from our records when it ends. There's no reset, so store it somewhere safe. Once the file no longer needs protecting, Unlock Word takes the password off, provided you still know it.
How to use Protect Word
- 1Upload the DOCX
Click Choose file or drop a .docx on the page. Old .doc files need to be saved as DOCX first.
- 2Type the password twice
Enter it in Set a password and again in Repeat password, so a typo can't lock you out of your own file.
- 3Click Protect Word
The file is encrypted in an isolated process. A document that already has a password is refused rather than locked twice.
- 4Download the locked copy
Save the copy ending in _protected.docx and send the password separately, by phone or message.
Why use Cubfile for this
- Office's own AES-256
Encryption follows the standard Word itself uses, so no extra app or special reader is needed to open the file.
- Whole file encrypted
Text, pictures, comments and document properties all sit inside the encrypted package, not just blocked from view.
- Password not kept
What you type is used for this task only and removed from our records the moment it finishes.
- Original left alone
You download a new file with _protected in its name, so the working copy on your computer stays as it is.
