About Subtitle Editor

Subtitle Editor is for making or fixing subtitles while you watch: captioning your own video, correcting a machine transcript, fixing a few mistimed lines in a download. Open a video and it plays right in the page, with the current subtitle shown over the picture; open an SRT, VTT or ASS file, or start from nothing.

Keyboard shortcuts keep it quick: Space plays and pauses, N adds a line at the current moment, [ and ] set the selected line's start and end, and Ctrl+Enter adds the next line as you type. Split and Merge with next reshape lines, Shift all by moves everything at once, and overlapping lines turn red. Save as SRT, VTT, ASS or TXT. Nothing is uploaded, and your work is kept in the browser.

FAQ

Subtitle Editor: questions and answers

Does the Subtitle Editor upload my video?
No. The video plays from your own device and the subtitles are edited in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers, and it doesn't use any daily tasks.
Which formats can the Subtitle Editor open and save?
It opens SRT, VTT, ASS and SSA files and saves SRT, VTT, ASS or plain TXT. ASS styling tags are removed when a file is opened, so styled subtitles come back with a simple default style. To edit subtitles embedded in an MKV or MP4, save them as a file first with Extract Subtitles from Video.
How do I time subtitles quickly?
Play the video, press N when someone starts speaking, type the line, and press ] when they stop. Adjust any start with or by typing a new time like 00:01:23,500. When a whole file drifts further out of sync over time, [Shift Subtitles can stretch it to fit between two lines.
What happens if I close the tab?
Your lines are saved in this browser as you work. Open the editor again within 14 days and you'll be offered to continue where you left off.
Is there a limit on video length?
No fixed one. Nothing is uploaded, so the only limits are what your browser can play and your device's memory.
