About Password Protect ZIP
Password protect ZIP archives before you email payslips, send a contract to a client or park backups in cloud storage. Upload your files, set a password and download a ZIP encrypted with AES-256, the WinZip format that 7-Zip, WinRAR, Bandizip and The Unarchiver all open. The ZIP viewer built into Windows can't read it, so point the recipient to one of those apps.
If you already have a ZIP, upload it and we repack its contents under the password, so nobody has to unzip twice. One thing to know: ZIP encryption hides what's in the files but not their names, which anyone can still see in the list. If the names themselves are sensitive, rename the files first.
How to use Password Protect ZIP
- 1Add your files
Choose or drop the files to protect, up to 20 per task on a free plan and 50 with VIP; an existing ZIP counts as one file.
- 2Set the password twice
Type it in Set a password and again in Repeat password, so a typo can't lock you out.
- 3Click Password Protect ZIP
We pack and encrypt the files in an isolated process on our server.
- 4Download the locked ZIP
Save the ZIP, then share the password through a different channel, such as a phone call or a text message.
Why use Cubfile for this
- Real AES-256 encryption
Not the old ZipCrypto scheme, which is easy to crack. Every file is encrypted with AES-256 in the WinZip format.
- Opens in common unzip apps
7-Zip, WinRAR, Bandizip and The Unarchiver ask for the password and open the ZIP on Windows and Mac.
- Lock an existing ZIP
Upload a ZIP and its contents are repacked with your password, so photos.zip comes back as photos_protected.zip.
- Several files, one ZIP
Lock up to 20 files in one go, or 50 with VIP; they arrive together in protected_files.zip.
