Meta Tag Checker

See every meta tag on a page, with length checks and a Google and Baidu search preview.

About Meta Tag Checker

Use this meta tag checker when a search result shows the wrong title, when a page won't get indexed, or before a new template goes live. Enter the URL, pick who to Visit as, a desktop browser, a phone browser, Googlebot or Baiduspider, and click Check. Some sites serve different tags to crawlers than to people, and switching the visitor shows it.

The title is measured in characters and in pixels against the roughly 580 px Google shows, and the description against about 920 px. The checker also looks for duplicate title or description tags, noindex in the robots meta tag or the X-Robots-Tag header, the canonical, viewport, charset and lang, Open Graph and Twitter tags, and an old keywords tag. A preview shows the snippet in Google and Baidu, and a table lists every meta tag plus canonical and hreflang links, ready to export as CSV. To try new wording before it's live, use SERP Snippet Preview.

Why use Cubfile for this

  • Lengths in pixels

Titles and descriptions are measured by width, the way result pages cut them.

  • Four ways to visit

Desktop, phone, Googlebot or Baiduspider, to catch tags served only to some visitors.

  • Header rules too

A noindex in the X-Robots-Tag header is caught along with the robots meta tag.

  • Every tag in one table

All meta tags, canonical and hreflang links, exportable as CSV.

FAQ

Meta Tag Checker: questions and answers

How long should a meta title be?
Google cuts titles at about 580 pixels, roughly 50 to 60 characters in English. The checker shows both the character count and the pixel width, so you can see how close you are.
How long should a meta description be?
About 920 pixels on desktop Google, roughly 150 to 160 characters. Longer descriptions get cut off with an ellipsis.
Why does the checker report noindex when I can't find it in the HTML?
The noindex can come from an X-Robots-Tag HTTP header instead of the page source. The report says where it was found. To see whether anything else keeps the page out of search, run the Indexability Checker.
Why would Googlebot get different meta tags?
Some servers, plugins and CDNs return a different page to crawlers. Choose Googlebot or Baiduspider under Visit as and compare with the desktop result. The request comes from our server with the crawler's user agent, not from the search engine's own addresses. The Search Engine Spider Simulator compares the whole page, not just the tags.
Do meta keywords still matter?
Google ignores the keywords tag. The checker lists it when a page has one, as a note rather than a problem.
