Keyword Density Checker

Analyze a web page or paste text to see which words and phrases repeat, and check the keyword the page should rank for.

About Keyword Density Checker

A keyword density checker helps when you're editing a landing page and want to confirm the main phrase actually appears, when an article reads as repetitive, or when you're comparing your page with a competitor's. Use Analyze a web page for a live URL, or Paste text for a draft that isn't online yet. Type the phrase the page should rank for in Focus keyword and you get a checklist: how many times it's used, its density against the usual 0.5% to 3%, and whether it appears in the opening text, the title, the meta description, the H1, an H2 or H3 subheading, the page address and a picture's alt text. Every place it's missing comes with a tip. Show where it appears lists the sentences that contain it, with the keyword highlighted, for up to 8 places. Pasted text has no title or headings, so there the checklist covers the count, the density and the opening text.

For a URL, our server fetches the page's visible text, title, description, headings and alt text, and the counting happens in your browser. Pasted text never leaves your device. Words are split with your browser's own word segmenter, so Chinese is counted in words rather than single characters. You get three tables, single words, two-word phrases and three-word phrases, each with a count and a density percentage, and for a page, whether each keyword appears in the title, description and H1. Common words and numbers are ignored by default, and you can set the shortest word length. When one word makes up more than 5% of the text, you get a keyword stuffing warning. Each table exports as CSV, and Download JSON saves the results together with the focus keyword checklist. For the other on-page basics, from title length to headings and alt text, run the SEO Checker.

FAQ

Keyword Density Checker: questions and answers

What is a good keyword density?
There's no official number, but for the main keyword about 0.5% to 3% is the usual range, and that's what the Focus keyword checklist compares against. Below it, use the phrase a few more times where it fits; above it, the text may read as keyword stuffing. Separately, any single word over 5% of the text gets a warning. Once the phrase is in your title, the SERP Snippet Preview shows how it reads in Google, Bing and Baidu.
What does the focus keyword check look at?
For a web page, how many times the keyword is used, its density, and whether it's in the opening text, the title, the meta description, the H1, an H2 or H3 subheading, the page address and a picture's alt text, with a tip for each place it's missing. The address isn't judged for a Chinese, Japanese or Korean keyword, as those addresses are usually written in Latin letters. For pasted text, only the count, the density and the opening text are checked. The checklist is also in the JSON download.
Does the keyword density checker work with Chinese?
Yes. It uses your browser's word segmenter, so Chinese text is split into words, and common Chinese and English words are skipped while Ignore common words is ticked.
Is my pasted text uploaded?
No. Pasted text is counted in your browser. For a URL, only the page fetch runs on our server, and nothing is stored.
How is keyword density calculated?
The number of times a word appears divided by the total number of words in the text, shown as a percentage. The total appears above the tables.
