Punycode Converter – Unicode Domains to xn-- and Back

Convert internationalized domain names to their xn-- Punycode form and back.

About Punycode Converter

A Punycode converter handles domain names with accents or non-Latin letters, such as münchen.de or Chinese domains, which DNS stores as Punycode, an ASCII form that starts with xn--. You need that form when a DNS panel, certificate request, server config or mail system won't take the original name, and you need to decode it when a log file or certificate shows something like xn--fiq228c.com and you want to know what it says.

Paste one name per line and each line is converted in the direction it needs. Names with Unicode letters become xn-- names and xn-- names are decoded, so a mixed list works. Full web addresses and email addresses work too, with the domain inside them converted. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, it isn't counted as a task and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded. Characters in the rest of a URL use percent-encoding instead, which URL Encode and Decode handles.

How to use Punycode Converter

  1. 1
    Paste domain names

Enter one name per line, in Unicode like münchen.de or in xn-- form.

  2. 2
    Let it pick the direction

Each line is encoded or decoded automatically, so a mixed list is fine.

  3. 3
    Copy the result

Copy the converted list into your DNS panel, certificate request or config file.

FAQ

Punycode Converter: questions and answers

What is Punycode, and why do some domains start with xn--?
The ASCII form of an internationalized domain name. DNS labels hold only letters, digits and hyphens, so münchen is written as xn--mnchen-3ya, with xn-- marking it as encoded.
How do I convert a Chinese domain name to Punycode?
Paste it, for example 中文.com, and you get xn--fiq228c.com. Use that form wherever a system rejects the Chinese name, such as some DNS panels and server configs. Once the records are in, a DNS Lookup on the xn-- name shows whether they resolve.
Can I convert Punycode back to readable text?
Yes. Paste the xn-- name and it's decoded automatically, which helps when a certificate, log file or email header shows only the encoded form. The SSL Certificate Checker lists every name a site's certificate covers.
Does Punycode apply to the rest of a URL?
No, only the domain name uses Punycode. Non-ASCII characters in the path or query use percent-encoding instead, which our URL Encode and Decode tool handles.
Does the Punycode converter upload my list of domains?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is sent to us, there's no limit and it doesn't use your daily tasks.
